Human use of the Zion National Park landscape dates back to at least 6,000 B.C. Almost 12,000 years ago Zion's first peoples, tracked mammoth, giant sloth and camel across southern Utah. Only the will to survive saw the Paiute, Anasazi and European descendants through centuries filled with great difficulties. In 1909, U.S. President William Howard Taft named the area a National Monument to protect the canyon. Today, many consider Zion a sanctuary and a place of life and hope.
