Which Hiking Group is Best for You?

The Red Mountain Hiking Program is designed to fit varied fitness levels. Participating in hikes that appropriately match your fitness level will maximize your results and enjoyment and enhance your experience.

To start, you need to evaluate your current fitness level. You may choose to take the hiking questionnaire or to use one of our treadmills and try different speeds and elevations for approximately 20-minutes. Note how you adjust to the speeds and elevation gains.

Red Mountain is located at 3100 feet above sea level and the hiking terrain is very uneven and rocky. If you have been walking on level ground in an area with elevations of less than 3000 feet, you should always start out in the Hiking Group lower than you feel you can manage (For example, if your fitness generally matches the description of a Trekker 3, but you have been walking on level ground without hills, start as Trekker 2). Allow yourself a day or two to become acclimated to our elevation and high desert climate.

Trekker 1

Trekker 1 is an excellent beginner level or great for those traveling from lower elevations. Terrain is generally easy and manageable. Once mastering Trekker 1, you may consider moving up to Trekker 2 hikes.

Hiking Pace 1.5 to 2 mph with rest breaks
Duration: Approximately 2.5 hours - Distance 2-4 miles in length
Terrain: Sand and rock trails with slight elevation gain.

Trekker 2

Trekker 2 hikes are sure to challenge the mid-level hiker.

Hiking Pace 2 - 3 mph with two or three short breaks
Duration: Approximately 2.5 hours - Distance 4-6 miles in length
Terrain: Variety of trails including slickrock, washes, some rock and uneven terrain. Elevation gain of 400-800 feet.

Trekker 3

Hiking Pace 3 to 3.5 miles per hour with one rest break per hour
Duration Approximately 3 hours - Distance 5-8 miles
Terrain: Wilderness trails and off-trail travel on steep slickrock, desert washes, rocky and uneven terrain. Exposed rocks may be present. Hikes may involve scrambling in wilderness environments. Balance and awareness of risk is necessary. Inclines may exceed 800-1200 feet.
